Slug

In SEO komt de term “slug” regelmatig wel eens voor. Uiteraard gaat het hier niet over een naaktslak, de letterlijke vertaling uit het Engels, maar over wat dan wel?

Wat is een slug?

Een slug is het deel van een URL dat na de domeinnaam komt. Het geeft in een vlot leesbare vorm aan waarover de webpagina gaat. Deze pagina naam wordt automatisch gegenereerd aan de hand van de titel van je webpagina. Maar het is mogelijk om deze een beetje aan te passen. Zolang de term in de slug het onderwerp is van de pagina. In de slug zien we alleen maar letters. Speciale karakters, zoals ampersands en vraagtekens, kan je niet zien. Daarnaast zie je enkel kleine letters en worden de spaties vervangen door een koppelstreepje.

Als je op de site van Online Marketing Monkey een blog leest omtrent linkbuilding uitbesteden, dan ziet de URL er als volgt uit:

‘linkbuilding-uitbesteden’ is dus de slug.

Belang van een slug

Een goede slug in je URL beïnvloedt je SEO op positieve wijze. Je kan er namelijk voor zorgen dat een bepaald zoekwoord zich in de slug bevindt, waardoor je beter zal ranken binnen de zoekmachine. Ook zorgt het ervoor dat je URL relevanter is waardoor gebruikers sneller geneigd zullen zijn om op jouw URL te klikken.

Verband met SEO

Zoals in de vorige alinea duidelijk werd zorgt het optimaliseren van je slugs voor een voordeel als het gaat om SEO. Het optimaliseren van je slug gaat hand in hand met het creëren van SEO vriendelijke URL’s. Het is duidelijk dat slugs belangrijk zijn voor SEO, maar hoe optimaliseer je ze nu? Hou rekening met volgende zaken om aan de hand van goede slugs aan goede SEO te doen:

Includeer de zoektermen waarvoor je wilt ranken in de zoekmachines in je slug.
Verwijder de ‘SEO stopwoorden’, zoals ‘een’, ‘het’, ‘en’,… Deze woorden helpen niet bij het verduidelijken van de content op pagina.
Maak er gewoonte van om “-” te gebruiken wanneer je woorden onderscheidt in een slug.
Hou de slugs kort. Kortere slugs hebben meer kans om overeen te komen met de zoekopdracht van de gebruiker.
Gebruik kleine letters en geen hoofdletters.
